Conceptual Design for the Construction of the “Krumpirište” Reservoir
The implementation of the Mt Medvednica snowmaking project is expected to continue, for which VPB d.d. has prepared a Conceptual Design for the Construction of the “Krumpirište” Reservoir. The ski season on Mt Medvednica lasts from December through April. The snow cover more than 30 cm thick can be expected on 15 % of the days in a year, and the one more than 50 cm thick can be expected on 8 % of the days in a year. Since the conditions when the snow cover is more than 40 cm thick are considered as excellent physical recreation opportunities, an adequate snowmaking system is a must for the normal operation of the skiing complex. In order to ensure a sufficient quantity of snow for the ski slopes to be covered from the current 12-14 days to 40 days with the optimum conditions, a new water storage reservoir called “Krumpirište” with a capacity of 35,000 m3 is planned to be constructed. It will be supplied with water from the existing system supplying Medvednica with technological water, which is fed from the Hornjak and Tisova peć sources.
In accordance with the described conditions and the Terms of Reference, two variants for the reservoir and adequate equipment have been developed which will make it possible to put into function all the ski slopes. Variant 1 foresees the “Krumpirište” reservoir as an open reservoir formed by excavation in the natural ground and construction of embankments using the material from the excavation. Variant 2 foresees the reservoir designed as an open reinforced concrete structure app. 95.0 m x 40.0 m in dimension.
