The conceptual design of Odransko polje flood control has been completed. It is an integral part of the Sava and Kupa protection system.
In its current condition, the status of Odransko polje, due to the unfinished flood control system left incomplete when compared to the original design, remains unresolved. This becomes obvious not only from the physical planning documentation but also based on the current state in the field where the adjacent settlements are either left with no or with partial flood control systems which are mostly inadequate. Additionally, Odransko polje hosts two categories of protected areas, that is, Turopolje and Odransko polje – important at the county level (for the County of Zagreb and the County of Sisak-Moslavina), as well as at the European level, since this region protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Under these conditions, the search for a flood control solution in Odransko polje region had commenced. Although the terms of reference included plans for protecting only the area around Sisak, in principle, Odransko polje was also comprehensively treated.
In terms of devising the conceptual design, targeted hydraulic calculations were performed. Using the established mathematical model, the current condition and the one which would arise in the event of particular interventions/works in the system were analysed. This relates not only to the planned works by Hrvatske vode for which technical documentation exists but also works/designs stemming from the documentation which is currently in progress. At the time of completing the design for Odransko polje, unfortunately, there is still no clear vision of the concept according to which a comprehensive flood protection system is to be finalised. Hence, the particular impacts of certain projects at Odransko polje were tested as simulations. Though not completely unrelated, the calculated impacts can be superimposed and, accordingly, with sufficient accuracy, the relevant water surface can be determined in the retention for particular combinations of works in the wider flood protection system.
